A 5k and a double hip adventure!

After doing a few rounds of 21 day fix and losing 60 pounds I decided I wanted to start running again.  When I was going to BYU 2001-2005 a roommate got me started with running and I fell in love.  By 2006 and into 2007 I was running 1/2 marathons all the time.  Then I got married, had a couple kids, gained weight and running was the last thing I wanted to do.  Well, I signed up for a 5k so I had real motivation and I started training.

I knew I needed to train right and start out slow since I hadn't run since 2007.  I got a couch to 5k app on my phone.  It was perfect.  A 9 week 3x a week walk/run training program to get me up to a 5k.  I started to fall in love with running again and I was so excited.  Until I finally got up to 3.1 miles in my training and my hips started hurting.  Every run once I hit 3 miles my hips hurt so bad I had to walk the rest of the way.  I was getting really frustrated and my day off in-between I would be in so much pain I couldn't walk or sit for very long.  But by my run day I was fine till I hit 3 miles and the pain cycle would start all over.

The day of my race I was doing so well but by mile 2 my hips were in so much pain.  The only reason I can think of was because I was running hills and I never trained hills.  I was so determined to finish though and I wanted to run the whole way so I ran through the pain.  I think the adrenaline of the race got me through.  The last 5k I had run I finished in 43 minutes.  This 5k race I finished in 38 minutes. even with my hips hurting!  I was seriously so proud of myself!  And it was beautiful.  It was through the Thanksgiving Point gardens.  My co-worker/friend/beachbody coach ran the race with me.  It was fun to have someone there who was also trying to accomplish personal goals for herself.  WE DID IT!  When I got home our entire house was clean.  Danny had swept and mopped the floor, vacuumed, washed all the dishes, and lunch was made.  I was surprised and Danny told me that he was so proud of me for accomplishing a race so he wanted to surprise me and come home to a clean house so I could relax!  I have the best husband ever!  Here are some pics from race day!

My sister-in-law also invited me to run in a 5k in Blanding on July 4th so I knew I just needed to keep running and train just to get my time faster.  But after my race, the next couple runs I tried my hips started hurting after only 1 mile and then the last time I ran I only made it 1/2 a mile and then I couldn't walk for 2 days after that.  I cried all day every day and trying to teach PE was impossible.  It was time to go to a dr.  My favorite dr who is also a sports medicine dr didn't have any opening for 2 weeks but I was in so much pain so I went straight to the instacare.  That dr. gave me some pain pills so I could sleep and then referred me to a sports medicine dr in the same building and he could see me the next day.  The sports medicine dr took a bunch of x-rays (painful!) and then the results were in.  I have a stress fracture in my right pelvis, and my left hip was completely out of place.  He said it was all the running on pavement that did me in.  He got my left hip back in place and then told me I could not do anything except swim or ride a bike for 6 weeks!!!! NO!!!!  I was not happy about that.  That meant my 5k was out and all the things I had planned was out.  I started a workout group at my school (my dr said heck no! worse thing I could do on my hips) and I had some hikes planned but I could barely walk around my house without being in pain).  So frustrating but I will do anything to get back to my normal self!  He also referred me to physical therapy for 3 weeks.

Rockin' the x-ray shorts!!!!

My therapists told me that along with all the problems the dr figured out I also have some muscle problems.  I have one main muscle that was doing all the work when I was running and wasn't letting the other 3 muscles help.  Which is not normal and that one main muscle is one that has a lot of nerves running through it so it would get inflamed and pinch the nerves so that explained the pain and also some numbness.  Therapy has been painful but I can tell it's helping.  They gave me exercises that only work the 3 smaller muscles so I can make them stronger then they will give me exercises that use all 4 so I can be back to normal.  I can now do more and walk more without hurting.  I have my days if I walk too much but I am doing my therapy homework exercises and making sure I only ride my bike or swim.  They told me I should be able to run again and maybe I will need to take it easy but I won't give up!  They said most of the people that come in for therapy are runners especially runners that use to run 1/2 marathons.  My father-in-law said he always knew running was bad for you ha ha.  Some truth to that!  Sadly.  Only 32 and I am already having hip problems :(

Well, summer has been so fun so far but that's another post...
